Hitachi's 60MIPS SH-3 Series 32bit RISC Microprocessor Enables Cost-Effective Portable Processing, Consumer, and Wireless Applications

Brisbane, CA - September 16, 1996
Hitachi America, Ltd., Semiconductor & I.C. Division introduces the SH7708 32bit RISC microprocessor, a member of the third generation in the SH Series. The device achieves 60MIPS performance at 3.3V, 60MHz, while dissipating less than 600mW, typical. It has a SuperH(TM) RISC engine with 5-stage pipeline, offers an address space of up to 4GByte, uses a 16bit fixed instruction length for improved code efficiency, and provides single-cycle execution of basic instructions for high performance. Included on-chip are a MMU and 8KByte cache (configurable as 4KByte cache and 4KByte RAM), 32bit internal and 32/16/8-bit external data paths, 32x32+64-->64bit MAC, 32bit/3ch timer, and 2ch user break controller, as well as SCI, RTC, WDT, CPG, PLLs, 8bit I/O, SDRAM/Fast-PageDRAM/PSRAM interface, and 2-slot PCMCIA support. Applications for the RISC microprocessor include PDAs, hard disk drives, cellular phones, set top boxes, electronic games, navigation systems, networking equipment, printer network cards, and digital cameras.

Hitachi is the number one supplier of RISC devices worldwide, with shipments of SH devices exceeding
1.5 million per month. A 100MHz, 100MIPS SH-3 version is expected in early 1997.

FeatureBenefit
Single-cycle instruction for basic instructionsHigher performance; clock speed is as fast as 60MHz
16bit instructions; upward compatible with SH SeriesEfficient code density; developers can use familiar tools
Higher performance: 60MIPSCan implement user systems with improved performance
MMU + 8KByte cache (or 4KByte cache/4KByte RAM)Allows more effective systems management
32bit internal and 32/16/8bit external data pathsProvides fast, flexible data processing, while enabling the use of cost-efficient peripheral devices
Low voltage (3.3V), low power (<600mW, typical)Extends battery life of portable systems
Large address space and enhanced direct memory interfaceDirect interface to SDRAM/Fast-Page DRAM/SRAM/ burst ROM eliminates need for additional glue logic
MAC32 unit32/16-bit DSP functionality for fast computations
Selective integration (peripherals include timers, WDT, PLLs, UBCs, SCI, I/O...)Aids the design of minimal chip-count systems for "Personal Access" applications
QFP-144Facilitates the engineering of compact system designs
